She knew she couldn't count on him, but what else was there to do? With a sigh, she left the cottage, turning off the lights as she went.

Last year I read Firefly Lane and loved it, so I am hoping True Colors lives up to my expectations!

Annie felt carefully around the lining of the jacket; then picking up a letter opener from the table, she ripped apart its frayed silk. Long expired credit cards, drivers' licenses, passports, all with her father's photo but with different names, fell out onto the hall carpet.

The cat showed up on our door that night - made it through the front entrance of our building and all the way up to the twelfth floor. We found him sitting patiently on our Daisy patterned Welcome mat when we returned from grocery shopping.

Through the windows, bright red strobe lights flashed across the walls accompanied by a high-pitched wailing. The sound was nagging and accusatory. It was nothing, nothing like a song.

--Bel Canto by Ann Patchett

I'm about halfway through Bel Canto and am struggling with it a bit, and trying to decide if I will finish it or not. I really enjoyed Patchett's other books I've read (Truth & Beauty, The Magician's Assistant), but this one isn't really keeping my attention. If you've read it, did you like it?

They came to a mountain town called "La Rumorosa" - named for the winds that whistled through the canyons - and stopped outside a small house of sand-colored rocks. A thread bare sofa and two living room chairs, springs sprung, sagged in the front yard, facing a fire of mesquite wood.

George was fingering the amulet beneath the cloth of his tunic as he squinted at the face of the gatekeeper.

"Was your head crushed in battle?" he asked. Sir Andrew frowned as George's impulsiveness.

This week Tuesday Thinger Question: Do you visit the memes section often? Have you visited recently? Have you discovered anything that surprises you when you visit the memes for your library?

Here are the current meme's available:
You and None Other. Books shared with exactly one member.
Dead or Alive? How many of your authors are dead?
Dead or Alive Comparison How do you stack up against others?
Male or Female? What gender are your authors?
Work Duplicates. Works you have more than one of.

I have to admit, I didn't even know this section was on the site.

I glanced briefly at mine and learned that about 90% of my authors are alive, which doesn't surprise me too much as I read a lot of contemporary books. I also thought this...Zombies (?)
None yet...was a pretty funny entry under Dead or Alive.

I also looked at my male to female ratio on authors, as didn't have any idea what this figure would be, and about 2/3 of them are female. There are also about 50 of my authors that aren't set as male or female, so I will work on updating those.

What do your stats look like?

High expectations-great,
I burned myself again.

have learned to underachieve.

-Impulse by Ellen Hopkins

I've been on a bit of a YA kick lately, but this one is a little different than some other YA books I've read. The entire book is free verse poetry. I've never read poetry and didn't know what to expect, but I have to say, I love this book!

This week on Tuesday Thingers Wendi asks: Were you aware of the Member Giveaways Program? Have you posted any books in the giveaway? If so, what are your thoughts on the program? Have you requested any books, and if so, did you win any?

I noticed the program a few weeks back but haven't had much time to look it over. I think it's a good way for authors to get in touch with even more readers, but it seems like most members use it as a way to clear off their bookshelves. There isn't anything necessarily wrong with this, but it seems the swap sites, like Bookmooch or Paperback Swap, might be an easier way to do this.

I requested a couple of books from the member giveaways when I first noticed the program, but didn't win any of them. I haven't checked back to see what the new offerings are.

Today's Tuesday Thinger question from Wendi: Were you aware of the Early Reviewer Program? Have you received any books from the program? If you have, how have you liked the book(s)? Any other thoughts on the LTER program?

I have been a member of the LT Early Review program for over a year, and I have gotten some really good books through them.

My library and reading tastes are pretty diverse, so I have been very fortunate to receive quite a few books from them. I currently have 10 books tagged as LT Early Review books and I just got notice today that I will be receiving another book from the February selections.

A couple of my favorite books that I received from the program are Monique and the Mango Rains: Two Years with a Midwife in Mali by Kris Holloway (review) and Takeover by Lisa Black.

I really like that the LT Early Review program takes into consideration what you have in your library when handing out review copies. I think this helps publishers get the books into the hands of people will enjoy them the most. While this isn't always perfect, it adds a dimension that is hopefully beneficial to the publishers.

Ginny had a strange feeling that leaving laundry on the kitchen chairs was something Aunt Peg didn't allow when she was here. For someone who lived pretty randomly, she was a bit of a neat freak.

Today's Tuesday Thinger question from Wendi: Do you have a specialized blog where you only review a certain genre or type of book? If so, what is your favorite thing about that type of book? If not, what is/are your favorite genre(s)? What makes that genre(s) a favorite?

I try to post reviews of everything I read, so my blog features a bit of a mixed bag. I read a lot of fiction, including bestsellers, mysteries, historical fiction and some young adult.

I also read a lot of non-fiction. Most of these are memoirs, but I also enjoy books on travel, food and social issues. I also love audio books and review these too.
I really can't pick a favorite genre. When I can't decide what to read next, like now, I usually fall back on a mystery. I can get lost in the action of a good mystery. The characters may not be terribly complex, but they usually feel familiar. I love complex characters that make you think, but sometimes the escapism of a fast paced mystery is just what I need.

What's your favorite genre?

A moment later Rhyme heard his aide's footsteps returning solo. Rhyme was wondering if someone had delivered a package. But then his mind jumped: Sunday. A visitor could be in street clothes and running shoes, which would make no sound on the entryway floor.

--The Broken Window by Jeffery Deaver
I love the Lincoln Rhyme series! With some of the series I read, the later books haven't been as good, but this series never disappoints.

Today's question: How do you get your books for reviewing? Do you track them somehow (excel, database, etc), or just put them in a tbr (To Be Read for anyone that doesn't know) pile?

I review everything I read so my books come from all over. My own TBR pile consists of three bookshelves, double stacked so I always have something available to read! Most of the audio books I read come from the library, with a few coming from publishers for review.

When I am fortunate enough to receive review copies I keep track of release dates in a Google Calendar. I try to have my reviews posted right around the time a book hits stores. I think this gives the publisher and author the most exposure, and hopefully brings book buyers their way.

Todd slammed the spoon he had been holding down. "I've had it," he said, and stormed out.

I am enjoying the book but it hasn't grabbed me like my last read and listen. The Help and Thirteen Reasons Why were both wonderful, and sometimes its hard to find a book to follow up great reads.

This weeks teaser:

She will hold her breath every time she sees a man walking a little boy down the street, and go home so agitated she will be unable to speak. She will begin letters that she will never send, and with every new one she tears into confetti, she will hope fervently that L. and Compass understand.

This weeks teaser comes from Delicate Edible Birds: And Other Stories by Lauren Groff. I am really enjoying this collection of short stories and will have a review up on it in the next couple of days.

Today's teaser is:

And years after now, when I think about that time and that man and when I think about the woman I was and the baby Nisa was, I still cry. Not all the time, but some of the time.

This is from Something Like Beautiful by Asha Bandele, pg 108 of the ARC version.

I just started this one last night and am only a few pages in, so this was a bit of a teaser for me too.
